Three stages of solar literacy
We organize solar education into three connected stages. Each builds on the previous one. You do not need to complete them in order, but the structure is there if you want it.
Foundation
How solar cells work at a physics level. What the main components of a residential system are. How electricity flows from panel to appliance. We explain this without assuming prior technical knowledge and without oversimplifying to the point of being misleading.
This stage is about building accurate mental models. A homeowner who understands how an inverter works conceptually will immediately understand why inverter choice matters when comparing proposals.
Performance Factors
What makes a solar system produce more or less than its rated output. Shading, orientation, temperature, degradation, and system losses all compound. Understanding each factor individually lets you ask better questions about your specific roof and climate.
This stage is practical. We move from "how does it work" to "how well will it work for me" and the variables that influence that answer.
Decision Readiness
Reading proposals. Evaluating installers. Understanding contracts, warranties, and grid connection terms. Knowing what monitoring to set up and what numbers to watch in the first years of operation.
Stage three is about translation: converting your technical understanding into practical judgment at the moment decisions actually need to be made.
How we construct our explanations
Analogy before abstraction
We introduce new concepts through familiar comparisons before giving technical definitions. A string inverter is easier to understand once you understand what "series circuit" means through a simple battery example.
Concept stacking
Each explanation assumes the previous ones. We do not repeat foundational concepts in every section but do provide links back when referencing something covered earlier.
Questions as anchors
Every topic section ends with practical questions you can ask an installer or derive from your own situation. Knowledge without application is not useful when you are about to sign a contract.
Common misconceptions
We flag frequently repeated misconceptions explicitly. "Solar doesn't work in winter" and "bigger panels are always better" are examples. Correcting these directly is more useful than simply stating the truth and hoping it replaces a wrong assumption.
From learning to doing
Understanding solar technology is the first step. The second is applying that understanding at the right moments in a real installation process.
We map our educational content to the stages of a typical residential solar project: initial research, site assessment, proposal comparison, contract review, installation, commissioning, and long-term monitoring. You know where you are in that process and what knowledge is relevant right now.
This contextual approach means you are not learning in a vacuum. Each piece of information has a clear moment where it becomes practically useful.
